Years of aging sports injuries — and surgery only as the last resort.

In his words
Three procedures with the same surgeon — because surgery was always the last resort.
I played a lot of sports in high school and college, which felt good then — but as you get older it doesn't feel quite so good. Some of those injuries that didn't really bother you a lot in your late teens and twenties start to head up over the years.
Dr. Gomoll fixed both my shoulders. Then I came to him for my knee, which had really started bothering me. We tried non-surgical management — physical therapy, injections — but I reached a point where every step hurt and I really couldn't be as functional as we wanted.
“One of the reasons I liked him is that surgery was always the last resort. That kind of integrity around somebody who's willing to push off the surgery — even though that's how they make their living — impressed me.” — Partial knee replacement patient
His confidence when he comes in, plus a really high capability and knowledge of what he's doing — put me at ease every time. My wife and I want to stay active for as long as we can. It's really important for me to make sure that as I get older, when I have orthopedic issues that arise including surgery, I'm very comfortable with who's going to be my partner in what can be a life-altering process — to make sure I'm able to resume those activities as quickly as possible.
About the procedure
Partial (Unicompartmental) Knee Replacement
A partial knee replacement resurfaces only the worn compartment of the knee — preserving the healthy bone, cartilage, and ligaments in the remaining compartments. Compared with a total knee replacement, recovery is typically faster and the knee feels more like the patient's natural knee. The trade-off: it's only appropriate when arthritis is confined to one compartment. More on knee replacement options →
“Surgery as the last resort”
Dr. Gomoll's published philosophy: more than half of orthopedic problems can be resolved without surgery. Surgery is only recommended when non-surgical treatment — physical therapy, injections, activity modification — has failed and the patient's quality of life is compromised. This patient explicitly cites that integrity as the reason he trusted Dr. Gomoll with three separate procedures.
